About us

The president of the German Research Association (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG) has established a German branch of SCAR/IASC in January 1992.
It fulfils the tasks of the national branch of SCAR as implemented in 1978 and of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU). Moreover, the national committee is also active in IASC (founded in 1990), which also is a member of ICSU since 2005. The DFG is a member of IASC since 1991.

Mandate
The German National Committee (GNC) SCAR/IASC acts as a national corresponding body to SCAR and IASC.
The GNC is planning and coordinating activities of German University research in the field of Polar Research together with the Alfred-Wegener-Institut, Helmholtz-Centre for Polar and Marine Research and associated national institutions that also provide required logistics. The GNC SCAR/IASC coordinates its work on the national level with the DFG commissions, that are responsible for the specific branches within geosciences, and also cooperates with further potentially affected DFG panels.
